Housing Assistance for Low-Income Immigrants and Families

If you are a low-income individual or family seeking housing, the local and federal governments can assist in several ways.

Privately Owned Housing

The United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) works with apartment owners to offer reduced rents, making it affordable for low-income tenants. You could search for an apartment by city and state on the HUD Resource Locator.

Public Housing

In addition to the privately owned subsidized rentals, there are Public Housing Agencies (PHA) throughout the country. You can find a list of housing assistance programs in your state by searching the PHA contact information sheet.

The PHA offers a Housing Choice Voucher program (Section 8) to help you pay for all or part of the rent. You can apply to yourlocal PHA office.

Your state or local government may sponsor other programs to help with rental assistance. You can find local state information here.

Shelter

If you or know someone on the verge of being homeless or homeless, HUD offers a list found here that helps people find shelter in their community. Once you are in contact with your local homeless service, you may be referred to a shelter bed immediately if one is available. If a shelter bed is unavailable, you may be placed on a waitlist until one becomes available.
